Battle Fatigued Captain Tiberius

September 24th, 2009

Captain Tiberius of the Red Scorpions.

September 23rd, 2009

Effectively finished awaiting varnish (raining outside, so it’ll have to be tomorrow). I believe the client wants a more heavily battle damaged figure, but as I always apply battle damage last, I figured I’d show him as he is and get some feedback from the client at the same time.

Ciaphas Cain finished!

September 23rd, 2009

Here he is.

The Red Scorpion Captain is very nearly finished. Pics to come in a few hours.

Ciaphas Cain gets his warpaint.

September 21st, 2009

This heroic little fella is 99.9% finished. I’ve noticed a few little bits that could be painted better (only noticed after taking photos) and he also requires a coat of Testers Dullcote to finish him off. Once he’s varnished (Dullcote is a matt finish obviously) I’ve brush his boots with gloss varnish to give them that just polished look.

I’m really pleased with how this model has turned out, there’s no real part of the model that looks like an obvious conversion.

With large areas of black on this model I tried an different approach to painting him. All the black areas of his coat and clothes were painted in a mid grey, and then I added multiple layers of black and blue inks. I think the end result is quite subtle and these photos aren’t the best, but I’m happy with the it.

I’ve also very nearly finished the Red Scorpion Captain paintjob, but I made some alterations quite late in the process to get the colour scheme to work better. His pics along with 100% finished Cain will be up tomorrow.

Also managed to make some headway on the first Terminator. I’m keeping the sculpting of his armour really tight and sharp, with as few flaws as possible.

Scaled up Orks?

September 17th, 2009

So I was looking through my Ork bitz box today (about £300 worth of unassembled Orks) and figured I really ought to finish building an army of them. This will have to wait a while till I’ve cleared the back log of orders of course. So far in my Ork converting experience I’ve converted 2 Warbosses, the second because the first wasn’t big enough… sound familiar. This was before the AoBR Warboss was released and I now find myself wanting to convert a third Warboss who will tower over everybody.

My Orks so far have all been from the Snakebite Clan, but I think with all the cool plastic and FW vehicles for Orks now I may switch to a Nob heavy Evil Sunz Trukker force instead. At the moment these are just ideas, but I thought it interesting that I now want bigger Orks as well as Space Marines.

For those who are curious, here’s some photos of the first two Warbosses, a Madboss (Madboy Nob) and Madboy No.1.

Alpha Legion Squad is finished! Yay!

September 17th, 2009

Took me a long time to get there, but the squad is finally finished (pending comments from the client). I personally wasn’t satisfied until about 80% of the way in when the squad started to really come together properly. Most elements of the models I’ve covered in previous posts and are fairly self explanatory. The most recent element were the Mark III back packs. In illustrations of various forms of power armour Mark II & III have a distinct style of backpack, although there has never been a specific model component (as far as I know) of that design. I tried to follow a similar styling to that of the armour – bigger, plates and cabling. Whilst the the vents on the top are very difficult to keep uniform, I’m fairly pleased with the final thing.

The Alpha Legionnaire Badge on the shoulder pad was first made in greenstuff and then casts were made using silicone rubber putty as a simple one piece mold. At some point I’ll make a post about this new material, but I’ve only just started experimenting with it, so I’ll wait till I’ve had a chance to try a few things first.

The whole squad has come together nicely, whilst they aren’t perfect conversions, there is definite progression occurring over time, which is obviously nice to see. For anyone who’s interested the client plans to use these as “counts as” Grey Knight Terminators.

Anyway, here’s the pics:

Legionnaries Update

September 13th, 2009

Just a quick self explanatory update. The rest of the squad isn’t far behind. Note: the Mark III has a Mark IV backpack in this pic, his own will be slightly different when finished.

Alpha Legionnaries, now with arms.

September 8th, 2009

Here’s a few shots other the Alpha Legionnaries I promised ages ago. I’m especially pleased with how the icon on the squad leader’s chest came out. The Mark IIIs are considerably bulkier than the Mark IVs but that’s intentional as they are meant to look more heavily armoured. I’ll be adding rivets to the Mark IIIs tomorrow, and if that doesn’t provide enough detail perhaps small eagle icons in the center of the chest plates. Everything else is pretty straight forward. The backpacks and pads are being worked on too.

After these are done (along with a couple of painted minis) I’ll be focussing Terminators, getting the tutorial finished and a Huron Blackheart conversion.

For all those waiting please be patient.

SPACE HULK!!!

September 5th, 2009

Wow, what can I say…

For some reason Space Hulk was one of the games first released when I started into the hobby, but I never actually played it. Now that it’s been re-released, I finally get to jump in and start blasting Genestealers into gooey little bits. Space Hulk is of course the perfect game for the types of conversions I like to do, and I can foresee (at least when I have some more spare time) creating all kinds of alternate rules and models to use in the game.

I think tomorrow I’ll start digging through all my really old White Dwarfs and see if I can find and rules for other 40K races, at least to provide inspiration. Hell I might even consider re-making the board sections in 3D, how cool would that be?

Edit: The fact the Terminators are also of the Blood Angels chapter makes me want to go back to them and do some more work on my 3rd company army (ain’t Captain Tycho the greatest :-D ?).

Red Scorpion Captain ready for painting.

September 4th, 2009

Well here he is, ready for painting. I still need to check with the client that this guy’s up to standard, but I’m pretty pleased with him. Still need to add some decoration to the base (ruins) but that’s not a big deal. I’m especially happy with how the Storm Shield turned out, makes all that filing down worthwhile.
