Selling compatible bits…

March 5th, 2010

With the arrival of Chapterhouse Studios as a maker of compatible bits for GWs model range, I amongst many others I would say have come to realize that there is actually a lot more room to maneuver when it comes to selling model components.

I’ve been thinking a bit about this lately and I’m considering producing scaled up components to complement GW’s plastic range (mainly Space Marines obviously). Not complete models in themselves, but lets say legs, chest plate and shoulder pads. You’d still have to purchase their models for the heads, backplates, backpacks, arms, weapons and accessories.

From what I can tell this is perfectly legal, though I’d have to stay clear of iconography. It doesn’t impact on GW’s sales because you’d have to buy their models to build something complete anyway.

As a side note, I’ve started work on a series of Wolf Cavalry, as have many others, and hope to have something to show off in a few weeks time. For now I have to get used to using a new modelling material (Fimo).

great to hear i have to say im really excited about this and the custodes will be full of win i have to say, i agree tho if you are only making legs, and bodys we will have to buy boxs for the other bits unless we have a very large bit box from say 20 years of collecting lol.

i struggle with the body, the middle bit where it joins to the legs. is this a definate plan or still just an idea?
  • Yes these will definitely be going ahead. I'll start by casting my own (for my own marine armies). If the quality is up to scratch I'll start selling them. If the demand in there I may get them cast by a local company.

After giving it some thought I scraped the pewter idea and decided to go good old toxic resin.

I'd originally opted for pewter because I want to use it for some other original miniatures I'm designing. But that's another future post :-)
  • @Tom
But you can't buy just arms, heads, weapons, backpacks and half the torso from GW. You have to buy a whole one of their minatures to complete the figure. So how does this infringe upon their sales?
  • Tom
    Not quite.
If you do a torso, legs and so on this will directly infringe on GW sales as they no longer sell a whole SM mini since yours replace it.
  • Alpharius
    Agreed!

I'll be buying them regardless of whatever material you finally decide upon.

I'm also VERY interested in what you come up with for "counts as" Custodes too!
  • Custodes would be interesting
Youd have the ability to really go to town on the detail, as they are like the elites of the elites.
Resin would be brilliant; but i would be content to buy it in pewter as well, granted it was in pieces not solid blokes.
    Keep us updated :p
  • It's possible... but I'm making no promises. :p
  • Alpharius
I know I'd prefer them to be in resin, if at all possible...

    Looking forward to this!
  • Crane
Pewter? :( But thats so hard to do properly when converting... but is easy to cast I guess.

Custodes sounds like win, seen some russian made and they are kewl :)

  • Crane :

If The “MaxMini-look” (if you could call it that…) is a source of inspiration I think most customers would be pleased. Qualitywise they could be better though! Bubbles in the resin and slight warping is sometimes seen on their stuff… but overall quality is good for the price.

They'll be cast in pewter most likely. We'll have to wait and see how the quality turns out, but I won't sell anything that I would use myself :-)

    @Tyruin son of ages

If it's a cast of your own sculpt and doesn't infringe on copyrights (like the imperial eagle or blood angel symbol) then it's perfectly legal.

No idea what kind of price I'd sell them at but I imagine they would be a sideline compared to other production casts I have planned (not 40K related).

As a side note I would like to make some complete figures that would be in the flavour of the Adeptus Custodes too. Not too many more projects to complete before I can start on stuff like this. It's gonna be interesting to see how far I can take it.

The question should really be how is this illegal.
GW has managed through very aggressive tactics to convince their fan base that they are the overlords of everything, and that nobody is allowed to even talk about their products without their permission.

    Fair point.
Even some of my friends at the local gaming club, who casted some of thier bits for personal use were harried by the stores staff.
If you decide to cast them i just hope there up to your usual high standards :P
How much are you thinking of selling true scaled legs for example?

  • I would so buy it man.
How is this legal, out of curosity?

  • Nice to see that this idea is quite popular.

    @Crane

Not sure about making different marks. I do think there would need to be a few slight differences here and there with designs but nothing major. No reason really why there couldn't be approximations of the different marks though. Any iconography would have to be original though.

They'd be much like MaxMini's approximation of early marks of space marine helmets, which are wicked by the way.
  • Crane
Would there perhaps be parts for mk3 and upwards being made? Sure would be popular with the pre heresy crowd :D
  • Dragunov
Sounds like a good idea, your conversions inpired me to do some of my own, so avoiding the time it takes to produce the leg parts would be a great idea!

    This is AWESOME news!

I'd be in line to buy a LOT of these.

In fact, I'm lining up right now!

This is VERY good news indeed!
  • rrchristensen
I certainly would be interested in this product. Especially true-scale legs - they're a real pain!
