I have a few painting tricks up my sleeve but I don't consider myself a good enough painter to offer any solid advice. If I were modeling and painting blood ravens I'd start by gathering all the cool DoW imagery I could in one place. When creating an army I like to have a really good idea of the overall aesthetic - so are they going to be clean cut or battle scarred, what's the style of heraldry and iconography (practical or artistic), will all the squad leaders have back banners or not. Whilst thinking about this I came across this rather snazzy image (a librarian alternative colour scheme perhaps, or maybe a commander or company champion): http://shadowness.com/silnc/blood-raven As for painting whatever you do, undercoat the shoulder pads white, as painting bone colour over black undercoat is a pain.
