I did a little job converting the rather stylish Lightning Claw on Forgeworlds Huron model a few weeks ago. Because there is only one right hand claw making a pair requires conversion from right to left. I also replaced the actual claws with plastic ones as the resin ones were too deformed for my tastes and too delicate to repair.

To do this I chopped up an original claw, separating all the fingers and thumb and rebuilding the palm attaching the fingers again in reverse of their original order.

I was a big fan of this claw when I first saw it on the Forgeworld website as I don’t really like any of the other existing lightning claws but I have to admit they aren’t really as cool looking as they could be. At some point I’m going to make my own lightning claws based on Horus’ claw in the art of FFG Horus Heresy boardgame. EDIT: Now this is what I call a claw!

The helm, top of the torso and backpack are all the resin parts from Forgeworld and I have to say the quality of these new Space Marine bits is just outstanding, the best I’ve seen from them so far. The rest of the sculpt is just a more intricate version of the model in the Artscale Tutorial.

This is my Daemonhunter Inquisitor for use in a Grey Knight army. I’ve always liked the characterful nature of Inquisitors and the opportunity to make them rather unique, even when the rules for them have been rather rubbish. This particular model is a simple conversion of Forgeworld’s Solomon Lok. I refitted him with a trimmed down laspistol (hellpistol actually) rather than his power sword as I prefer these kind of characters to not appear like full blown warriors.

Even though the model is finished now I’m tempted to tinker with him and swap out the pistol arm for a bionic one, maybe something really refined with a silver finish. Either that or I could modify the pistol by extending the barrel to make it more ornate looking. I’ve wanted to make a 40K scale inquisitor with shoulder mounted psycannon ever since I saw one on the Inquisitor Covenant model (Inquisitor game). This one was basically scratch built from numerous and random plastic bits, plasticard, greenstuff, guitar string and a brass bit from Forgeworld.

Spent quite a long time painting up my Inquisitor. I’ve always had a thing for NMM gold (started when the GW studio painted up Captain Tycho in NMM gold 20 years ago), and whilst this ain’t perfect, it’s also not too shabby, I just don’t think there’s enough of his armour showing to really make the gold finish that impressive.

The colours used for the NMM gold were Snakebite Leather, Golden Yellow, Skull White, with brown washes and a very thin glaze of green wash.

This Commissar Ciaphas Cain converted from a FW Death Korps Commissar. The brief for the conversion was to have him based off of the artwork on the book covers. The head was replaced with one from a Master of Ordinance mini from the Imperial Guard advisors box set. For this mini I tried out ‘Brown Stuff’ putty as apposed to the usual Green Stuff. I have to say that it’s definitely nicer to use than greenstuff. Too expensive to use on everything, but the reduced elasticity makes it ideal for small details.

The head-swap was the hardest part of this conversion. It took a good few hours to carefully remove the original head and trim the new one to fit, but eventually the result has turned out really nice. I was able to disguise the join between the two parts be sculpting a new collar on him. One of the other major features of this model is the ornate double edged chainsword. I couldn’t find an existing chainsword with the right dimensions of details, so I had to make one. I basically took the tooth edge off of two chainswords, glued them together. I then added a trimmed down motor bit from a Space Marine chainsword. The handle is from an catachan knife and is perfectly scaled to fit this model. The outer casing for the blade was filed off and then resculpted with brownstuff to make a clean finish

With large areas of black on this model I tried an different approach to painting him. All the black areas of his coat and clothes were painted in a mid grey, and then I added multiple layers of black and blue inks. I think the end result is quite subtle and these photos aren’t the best, but I’m happy with the it. For the boots I gave them a brushed on coat of gloss varnish, if nothing else to make them look different from all the other black elements on the model.
